Abstract
A pretest to evaluate for community use, the integrated teaching materials, concerning family planning, -maternal and child health and nutrition, parasite control, and overall planning for better family living, was conducted from March 10 to 13, 1981, through a workshop for a total of 375 leaders of the village mothers clubs of the Whaseoung family health project area, with the cooperation of the local family health center and of UNICEF.
A printed booklet, consisting of 50 black and white pictures with story-style narrations, was used for the material evaluation. The study comprised four categories: 1) questionnaires to inquire about family living conditions 2) group reading, by subjects, to identify difficult terminology or sentences in the material 3) written tests before and _after group reading of the material, 4) determination of the material¢¥s comprehensibility, usefulness, the level and structure of interest generated, and its value for community use.
1. Family living conditions
Forty-three percent of the subjects; -were under 40 years of age. Sixty-one percent were educated at or below the elementary school level. One hundred percent of subjects possessed televisions; 46.7% had refrigerators. Average number of children was 3.62. Average rate of contraception practice was 76.5% -of the subject and tubal ligation and looping were methods predominantly used.
2) Material evaluation Concerning comprehension, 76.5 of subjects gave positive answers; 91.7% found the material useful. 83.7% stated that the material would be adequate for rural use, especially for leaders of village mothers¢¥ clubs. The majority, 94.4%, found the material interesting because of story-type narration with pictures. These subjects, however, suggested that colored pictures would be better than black and white, for field use. According to the comparative results of the written tests, on objective and narrative questions, average scores were 11.99 (S.E.=0.17) before training and 15.2 (S.E=0.21) after training, from a full score of 20, a significant difference, in terms of t=18. 10, p<0. 01.
The results also reflect the differences in educational background and age distribution of subjects. The authors recommend that the material be revised according to the evaluation of the pretest, for better material development and. its effective use in community family heath programmes.
